Moving Hints | The Pet Essentials

The Pet EssentialsMoving can be a stressful time and not just for you. Our pets, just like humans are most content when in familiar surroundings.

The key to moving with pets is to plan ahead as best you can. Before you move consider these points.

  • Keep a regular routine. Ensure mealtimes and exercise regimes remain as regular as possible right up until the move to reduce the risk of upsetting your pet.
  • Ensure you pet has proper identification on them at all times with their name, address or a phone number in case they do get lost.
  • Consider having your pet microchipped. The National Pet Register website is a valuable information resources with everything you need to know about this procedure including a location finder to help you find your nearest qualified implanter.
  • Visit the vet before you move to ensure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date. If you are moving out of your vet’s area remember to attain a copy of your pet’s veterinary records.

When you arrive at your new home with your pet immediately walk your dog around the new area so they become familiar with the neighbourhood. Ensure you also establish boundaries in your new yard. Reinstate and maintain your regular feeding and exercise regimes.

Cats should be kept indoors until they have had a chance to settle. When you first arrive with your cat try limiting the number of rooms they are allowed in. Gradually let your cat explore their new environment. Don’t forget to also surround your cat with familiar toys, comforts, food and water bowls.

A few forward thinking steps can help you and your pet’s transition into their new home a lot easier.
